Students in Mr. Sapp's STEM classes were given an engineering challenge to try and build the strongest geodesic dome with only gummy bears and toothpicks. Students were also given a task to build a tower that could hold a tennis ball. The ball had to be a specific height when stood on the table, and only supplies provided by Mr. Sapp could be used. The students did a great job by being creative and thinking critically. #4Cs #ActiveLearning

The 6th grade students in Mrs. Myers's 4th-period Science class had a remarkable experience recently when they participated in the Skype a Scientist program. Lindsay Blank, a meteorologist from Spire Global, spoke to the students about various aspects of weather and climate, including her work in chasing tornadoes, which she said was her favorite weather phenomenon and the most misunderstood. During the Skype session, the students had the chance to ask Ms. Blank questions and share their experiences with weather data collection. Ms. Blank was particularly intrigued by the students' work using drones and Databots to collect weather data, and she mentioned that she never did anything that cool in Science class when she was their age. Spire Global, Inc., the company where Ms. Blank works, specializes in tracking global data sets powered by a large constellation of nanosatellites. The company is involved in tracking weather patterns, among other things, which is a crucial aspect of meteorology and weather forecasting. The Skype a Scientist program was a fantastic opportunity for the students to connect virtually with a real-life scientist, inspiring them to explore STEM fields further. The students learned firsthand about the work that scientists do and the impact it has on our world. They gained a deeper understanding of weather and climate and the importance of accurate weather forecasting in our daily lives.

Mrs. Myers's 6th grade Science class recently had a comprehensive and exciting learning experience combining Databots and drones to study weather and climate. Databots, a state-of-the-art multi-sensor tool, provided live sensor data that allowed students to collect, visualize, and analyze real-time data from real-life scenarios. The students collected temperature, humidity, and air pressure data throughout the day, comparing their findings with published weather forecasts. The activity spanned several days, allowing the students to observe the current weather based on the collected data and the information they learned in class. In addition to using Databots, the students also learned how to fly drones, which added another exciting dimension to their study of weather and climate. By taking control of the drones, they collected aerial data, providing a unique perspective on weather patterns and the surrounding environment. The students gained valuable skills and had the chance to apply their knowledge in a practical way. Overall, the students well-received this immersive and comprehensive learning experience, and proved an effective way to bring science to life in the classroom. By combining the use of Databots and drones, the students gained a well-rounded understanding of weather and climate and valuable hands-on experience that will serve them well in their future studies. #PBL
