The College and Career Academy (CCA) at Claxton High School is thrilled to announce our 2022-2023 pathways. We are happy to continue offerings of Accounting, Agriculture Mechanics (with Welding), Allied Healthcare, Audio-Video Technology and Film, Culinary Arts, Entrepreneurship, Firefighting, and Teaching As a Profession. We are excited to add pathways in EMR/EMT, Manufacturing Engineering Technology, and Web Design (Pathway/Foreign Language).
According to Dr. Marty Waters, Superintendent of Evans County Charter School System, "The partnerships we have are instrumental in creating opportunities for us to focus our offerings. These partnerships allow us to uniquely pivot to align pathways to industry needs and developments."
Holly Durrence, CEO of the Evans Region College and Career Academy (ER CCA), added, “We've partnered with Claxton Poultry to create a pipeline of industrial maintenance workers, and the addition of the EMR/EMT pathway will allow those in the county's Firefighting program to leave high school as career firefighters."
"We appreciate our business and community partners. They've provided us with feedback to help us better address workforce needs. This gives our students opportunities to gain more real-world experience and better prepares them to be successful in careers. Today's exciting news from Hyundai, a $5.5 billion automobile plant that will be built near Ellabell and that is expected to employ thousands, will hopefully be another manufacturing partnership to provide career options for our students. Our CCA stands ready to make connections," Mrs. Durrence stated.
The counseling teams at CMS and CHS began releasing schedules to rising 7th-12 grade students today; rising 6th Graders will get schedules starting on May 24th at 6th Grade Orientation for Students and Families. Of course, information could change between now and the beginning of school; the counseling teams will share updated information as it becomes available.
Students may use their cohort's Google Classroom to request changes. Our goal is to have all schedules situated before school starts. Once again, please know that student schedules are subject to change. While our counseling teams do not foresee major changes, small changes still need to be made to better balance classes and honor student requests.
Thank you, Mr. Valentine, for being a mentor guest speaker in third grade.
He is encouraging students to choose good behavior and show respect in school.
The Evans County Charter School System (ECCSS) would like to recognize Stephanie Myers and Kelsey Stephens, two Claxton Middle School science teachers, for their recent commitment to the Developing Computer Science Master Teachers for Georgia Rural Schools project.
The project, a collaboration among Mercer’s Tift College of Education, College of Liberal Arts, and Sciences and School of Engineering, aims to increase the 21st century skills of students while improving computer science instruction across our state. Dr. Thomas Koballa, Dean of the College of Education at Mercer, has been instrumental in developing the project and recruiting colleagues to help champion efforts across the state. Sixteen teachers from eight rural school districts in Georgia are being recruited to develop their computer science pedagogy and to expand the computer science skills of our students.
Teachers meeting the requirements of this program will earn a teacher leadership specialist or master’s degree in education with endorsements in computer science and instructional coaching. After completion of the graduate degree, each teacher, known as a “fellow” during the project, will also receive a $10,000 stipend each year for four years, in addition to his/her teaching salary.
Both Myers and Stephens expressed gratitude for being nominated and selected for the program. Mrs. Myers stated, “Technology is the way of the world today. Often, rural youth do not have the same opportunities to learn and experience the many realms of technology as students in larger cities. I am excited to learn more about the many facets of computer science and bring these experiences back to our students in the classroom.”
Mrs. Stephens added, “I'm very excited to learn new skills like programming and coding languages in order to teach those to my students and fellow teachers. Computer science skills have become a necessity in our world today, and I am thrilled to have the opportunity to become a teacher leader and empower others at Evans County Schools."
Assistant Superintendent of Academic Services for ECCSS, Dr. Kristy Vandenberg, said, “Through this partnership, not only will our students have the opportunity to learn about the latest advancements in technology and engineering, but also how computer science is part of our everyday lives. From healthcare equipment at Evans Memorial to the tractors at ArborGen, our community needs students who can successfully operate the advanced technology required in many careers. This also means that students must be taught how to think critically and problem solve.”
“This five year commitment will require a lot of extra work and time from all the teachers in the program, and I am so proud that Mrs. Myers and Mrs. Stephens have agreed to participate,” stated Dr. Vandenberg.
