Mrs. Keyfauver demonstrated to a fifth grade class and teacher how to use Makey Makey to build a circuit that would test items to identify conductors and insulators. Makey Makey uses a circuit board, alligator clips, a USB cable, a Chromebook, and coded project to create closed loop electrical signals to send the computer either a keyboard stroke or mouse click signal.
Mrs. Keyfauver encouraged curiosity and exploration by having students test conductivity of objects at their table or things they had with them. They constructed a t-chart of conductors and insulators.
Once finished, Mrs. Keyfauver challenged students to create a piano with the objects that they identified as conductors. She invited groups to try out the piano that she created out of fruits.
Design thinking relies on our ability to be intuitive, to recognize patterns, and to construct ideas that have functionality. This lesson combined tactile materials of the classroom with coding projects on the computer to bring creations to life. Students had to be creative, collaborate, critically think, and communicate. All skills that our community and industry partners desire their employees to have.
