Flashlight Friday is fun in Mrs. Phillips’ 2nd grade class! We turn out the lights, find a comfy spot & shine our light to read.
Ms. Rush's 7th grade students participated in a SOLE (Self Organized Learning Environment) research activity today.
The question students were researching an answer to was “Should schools start earlier or later?" Students were using their skills of communication, collaboration, critical thinking, and ability to research to back their claims and reasoning.

At CES, students participated in a Red Ribbon Week coloring contest. The winners enjoyed a hay ride to the Senior Citizens Park where they participated in the community Red Ribbon Week kick-off event.

ECCSS and Evans County kicked off Red Ribbon Week (RRW)this morning with a special ceremony at the Senior Citizens Park in Claxton. Designated students from each school participated in the ceremony: CES sent students who won their RRW coloring contest, and CMS and CHS sent students who were nominated based on character traits.
CES School Resource Officer, Rhiannon Cason, and Lieutenant James Waters, Claxton Police Department, opened the ceremony by welcoming everyone. Mayor Terry Branch shared a Red Ribbon Week proclamation. Dr. Marty Waters, Dr. Bobby Costlow, Dr. Paul Mizell, Lieutenant Waters, and Mayor Branch turned the fountain red in honor of Red Ribbon Week. CHS Ambassadors, Aaron Harrison, Valeria Hernandez, Aashi Patel, and Tyrone Atkinson served as student speakers and shared about the history of Red Ribbon Week, the effects of drug use on families and the human body, and closed with a call to action for everyone to choose life drug-free.
Tomorrow, everyone is invited to "Sock it to drugs!" and wear mismatched socks.

Students in Mr. Sapp’s STEM class are having fun learning about energy forms and transitions by building roller coasters. STEM 1 students constructed a roller coaster out of tissue rolls and tested their coaster with a marble. STEM 2 students built a coaster that uses a chain to haul the cart up a hill, changing from potential energy to kinetic energy as the cart goes down and around the track. STEM 2 students also learned about energy forms and transitions with a roller coaster simulation on the Oculus virtual reality headset. #projectbasedlearning #4Cs
Eric Christman and Matthew Stutler, two of our Firefighting students, volunteered to serve with the Evans County Fire Department at the annual Trick or Treat with Local Merchants Day. These guys are supporting their pathway and community and earning their required service hours for graduation. Eric and Matthew, you make us proud!

Sixty percent of all workplace errors are a result of poor listening, and nearly half of all employees who resign from a job report leaving because they did not feel heard. To help our students improve their listening skills, teachers in the CTAE department taught a common lesson that reviewed SLANT, a mnemonic providing reminders for how to make a conscious effort to hear the speaker's words and, more importantly, complete message. SLANT stands for Sit up, Lean in, Ask questions, Nod, and Track your speaker.
In the first picture, Mrs. LaKeisha Welch's students did not use SLANT when completing the listening activity. In the second picture, SLANT was used. The results speak for themselves. When we actively listen, our communication with others improves.

What do candy apples, fried Oreos, Korean fried corndogs, and funnel cakes have in common? You got it! They are fair foods. Students in Culinary Arts completed a unit on these fall favorites as the Georgia National Fair wrapped up and the Kiwanis Ogeechee Fair kicked off.

After performing in one of the toughest competitions of the season, the CHS Marching Band and Color Guard brought home scores of Excellent in all categories, excluding Drum Major, who received a score of Superior. The school store is getting a name and new look! Students in this year's Entrepreneurship class are working with their teacher, Mrs. Lee Ann Lane, to run this enterprise as any other business in our community. A grand opening will be held, financial reports will be maintained by accounting students, and entrepreneurship knowledge and skills will be applied so that customers keep returning and profits are maximized.

Mr. Seth Gutierrez, Ogeechee Technical College instructor, changed things up this week in his College Algebra class. He gathered students' answers using Plickers. This platform allows the instructor to scan the room with his cellphone as students hold up their unique card in a certain way indicating their answer to given problems. The teacher then uses the information collected to adjust his instruction.
