COVID-19 Update
Fifth grade students have been investigating electricity. They have been gathering information and exploring the difference between static and human-harnessed electricity. Students were challenged to develop a plan to get a can moving in a static electricity can race. Their engineering skills did not end there. They designed a complete, simple electric circuit, and explained all necessary components. After proving that they can successfully design a circuit to turn a light on, they investigated common materials to determine if they are insulators or conductors of electricity. How did they do it? They used MaKey MaKey, which is a small circuit board that turns everyday objects (like bananas) into
touchpads. It works by creating electrical circuits. In this investigation, they had to create a working piano by selecting objects that would allow electrons to flow through to close their circuit. If they attached objects that conducted electricity to their Makey Makey circuit, then their piano keys worked.
